Stadsatelierdeville is a flagship project that aims to enhance the ecological transition of the Belgian building sector by creating a common ground for circular construction, rooted in a new sustainable, inclusive, and local material culture.
Stadsatelierdeville brings together several Brussels-based actors committed to the shift towards a circular economy. Driven by the partnership TM STADSAT, the project unites the expertise of BC materials, BC architects & studies, and Democo / Herk&Red. Together with the partners Sonian Wood Coop, Circular Timber, Natura Mater, the project is fostering a local and circular approach to material use.
In response to climate challenges and the environmental impact of the construction industry, the project aims to establish Brussels as a reference point for circular construction. It includes the creation of an active, open-source experiment, a circular hub dedicated to the upscaled revaluation and processing of bio-, geo- and urban-sourced materials.
Located in the Port Business Park at Tour & Taxis, the project will develop 9,300 m² of co-productive space designed to foster synergies between architects, engineers, designers, contractors, craftsmen and educators. This hybrid facility will combine production, distribution, design, innovation, education and knowledge sharing focused on circular construction materials.
The hub also addresses a strategic need for the Brussels-Capital Region, providing storage and recovery facilities for underutilized resources and reclaimed construction materials in order to facilitate their upcycle and reuse in building projects. The design of the infrastructure was developed around the available resources, integrating circular, low-carbon, and reversible construction principles and ensuring that the building itself will act as a circular construction proof of concept.
Supported under the ERDF (FEDER) 2021–2027 Programme, it is a public and private co-financing project.
By 2029, Stadsatelierdeville aims to achieve a minimum of 1,380 tonnes/year of waste prepared for reuse and 1,280 tonnes/year of recycled waste, thereby making a significant contribution to the development of the regional circular economy.
